The Film: Grand Cru
Some years in Burgundy are monumentally difficult for winemaking. The region is often plagued with devastating frost, hailstorms, and disease in the vineyards. For winemakers who farm their vineyards according to organic and biodynamic principles, adapting to nature’s vagaries is just that much more challenging. This film documents the art of winemaking through the life of Pascal Marchand, during one of the toughest seasons in recent history in Burgundy. It showcases the labour and intensity of the winemaking process, and is dedicated both as a love letter to the beautiful complexities of the region, and as a cautionary tale about the unpredictabilities of climate change.
The Winemaker: Pascal Marchand
Pascal is one of the most respected personalities in Burgundy’s steeply traditional and highly competitive wine circles. He gets his hands on grapes from 14 different grand cru vineyards and produces scores of different Burgundies of every vintage. He is blessed with an acute instinct for the region’s finest terroirs and regularly coaxes out the most optimal expression of each wine with ease and panache.
